Introduction
How to explain the origin of “ought” in a moral sense is a central theme for moral philosophy. British moral sentimentalist philosophers in the eighteenth century, such as David Hume and Adam Smith, provide us with a unique approach to understanding this aspect of morality. Hume and Smith hold that moral judgements are based on moral sentiments, which arise from sympathy. Then, how can sentiment-based moral judgements obtain objectivity and authority? What reasons do we have to endorse these judgements and use them to guide our actions? How do these philosophers’ theories of moral sentiments inform their accounts of political authority and political obligation?
Systematic examination of these theories will not only promote our understanding of the historical development of Western ethics but also provide a valuable resource for the development of contemporary metaethics. To encourage the exchange of ideas, promote relevant research, and expand international communication, the College of Philosophy and the Center of Social and Political Philosophy, Nankai University, will hold the “Moral Sentiments and Moral Normativity” young scholar workshop on March 28, 2026.
