Abstract

大卫·休谟（1711-1776）被誉为英语世界最重要的哲学家之一。近年来，学界对其品格理论与道德德性学说投入了大量关注。本次互动式讲座将深度研读休谟著作中的关键篇章，并探讨当代学者受其伦理思想启发的理论提议。我们将首先剖析休谟对德性提出的两个定义，以及诠释者调和这两个定义的尝试。而后，我们将突破文本解读的边界，考察当代伦理学家如何以休谟思想为根基，发展出足以与新亚里士多德主义分庭抗礼的德性理论体系。

David Hume (1711-1776) is considered one of the most important philosophers ever to write in the English language. In recent years, interpreters and scholars have devoted a great deal of attention to his account of character and moral virtue. In this interactive lecture, we will explore some key texts from Hume’s corpus as well as present-day proposals inspired by his ethics. First, we will see how Hume seems to propose two definitions of virtue and how interpreters attempt to reconcile them. We will then depart from the letter of Hume’s text to look at how several present-day ethicists have developed Hume-inspired accounts of virtue that can rival neo-Aristotelian approaches.

恩里科·加尔瓦尼，爱丁堡大学哲学系勒沃胡姆早期职业研究员，博士毕业于圣安德鲁斯大学哲学系。主要研究领域为德性伦理学与西方伦理学史，尤其是英国情感主义传统（哈奇森、巴特勒、休谟、斯密等）、德性伦理学，以及德性伦理学在生物医药、气候环境等领域的应用。加尔瓦尼博士是爱丁堡未来研究所“技术道德未来中心”和圣安德鲁斯大学“伦理、哲学与公共事务中心”的活跃成员，研究得到了维康信托基金会、勒沃胡姆信托基金会、英国艺术与人文研究理事会及德国学术交流中心等机构的资助。近年来，多篇论文见于Inquiry，British Journal for the History of Philosophy, Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Hume Studies等期刊，以及Handbook of the Philosophy of Climate Change等论文集；2023至2024年间，作为世界卫生组织顾问参与撰写了近期发布的《世卫组织卫生伦理学研究优先事项指南（2025）》。

Dr. Enrico Galvagni is Leverhulme Early Career Fellow in the Department of Philosophy at University of Edinburgh and has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of St Andrews. His research focuses on virtue ethics, the history of ethics, mostly in the British moral sentimentalist tradition (Hutcheson, Butler, Hume, Smith, etc.), and the application of virtue ethics to debates in biomedical ethics and environmental ethics. He is an active member of the Centre for Technomoral Futures (at the Edinburgh Futures Institute) and of the Centre for Ethics, Philosophy and Public Affairs (at the University of St Andrews). Over the years, his research has been funded by the Wellcome Trust, the Leverhulme Trust, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), and the Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (DAAD), among others. His works can be found in journals like Inquiry, British Journal for the History of Philosophy, Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Hume Studies, and books like Handbook of the Philosophy of Climate Change. In 2023 and 2024, he was a consultant for the World Health Organization and contributed to writing the recently published ‘WHO guidance on the ethics of health research priority setting’ (2025).

Dr. Xiao Qi is a Lecturer in the College of Philosophy at Nankai University and has a Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of St Andrews. Her research focuses on the history of Western ethics, mostly in the British moral sentimentalist tradition. Her works can be found in journals like British Journal for the History of Philosophy and Hume Studies.
