The French socialism was thus above all republican, but also tinged with Marxism and various legacies of the utopias of the nineteenth century. Throughout its history, the French left has been influenced by two very important forces: republicanism, which is largely a “French” invention, and “Marxism,” which originated primarily in Germany and then spread to the Soviet Union. Our presentation aims to present the intellectual, philosophical, and political synthesis represented by “republican Marxism,” which can be traced back to Jean Jaurès and which offers unique intellectual and political proposals that may still be relevant today, beyond the case of France.
This text defends humanist Marxism against Althusser's critique, focusing on Lukács' work. Humanist Marxists like Lukács emphasize human agency and the concept of alienation that Althusser rejected. Lukács analyzes how capitalism prevents individual fulfillment through workplace exploitation and formal democracy rooted in economic inequality. He introduces the concept of specificity - individuals developing generic human capacities with personal touches. Late capitalism uses manipulation through advertising and mass media to redirect freedom from personal development toward material consumption, creating particularity - seeing oneself as isolated rather than connected to humanity. Digital platforms intensify this manipulation through persuasive technologies developed by researchers like Brian Fogg, making addiction and behavioral conditioning invisible and personalized, leading to commodified relationships and existential impoverishment.
