Abstract
Right after the Great War in Europe in 1923, the phenomenologist Edmund Husserl published important papers on ethics in a magazine called Kaizō. The works address the cosmopolitan nature of Husserl’s thinking as well as the enduring appeal of Husserl’s cultural phenomenology for today’s globalized age. The notions of crisis and renewal are clearly central to the thought of Husserl in his outreach to East Asian readers in his Kaizō articles. For Husserl, something critical from the European past had to be renewed to stop the catastrophe embodied in the Great War and its aftermath from getting worse.
This lecture explores Husserl’s earliest work on European Krisis, his unexpected interest in history, as well as his overlooked contributions to the ethics of renewal. I argue that his ethics of renewal bridges the gap between East and West, not through grand pronouncements but through his subtle reevaluation of the subject’s lived experience and its relation to the interpersonal structure of human consciousness that resonates with readers across the globe. His voice, born from the crossroads of cultures, reminds us of our shared humanity and the enduring power of human intentional consciousness in phenomenology, the very field he invented.
